Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Author: Stephen Chbosky

Charlie is a freshman.

And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.

Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

My Review:

This is one of those cult, teen/YA novels that everybody and their dog has read and raved about. It took me a while to actually start reading it but I wanted to see what all the fuss is about.

The main character Charlie is so incredibly sweet and lovely. Charlie is very innocent appears quite naive, however he is much more intelligent then he lets on. The phrases that he writes down are very deep and meaningful and, in truth, could belong on a motivational poster.

There isn't really a plot to the story, you just follow Charlie throughout his year. You watch him deal with his first kiss, making new friends, the type of music and books he likes. He deals with things like love, death and sex, many things that teenagers face today.

In a way this book doesn't feel like a novel, it kind of feels like a guide to teenage life. I would definitely recommend every teenager reads this book and delve deep into Charlie's mind. It's such a sweet yet hard hitting story. I can't wait to watch the film now!
